How to Select a Logistics School
With a rising demand for training that is focused on logistics, a few schools are designing programs specifically for rank-and-file warehouse workers. Companies want them to be aware of how their work affects customers and how what they do in one area can affect activities at other locations as well, says Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
The degrees available vary, but most include foundation courses that cover basic concepts, like operations and supply chain management procurement, transportation, distribution networks warehouses and inventory management, and business fundamentals. Some universities provide specializations in ecommerce, logistics for retail, transportation, logistical analysis and global logistics management.
Graduates are prepared to serve in roles as supply chain managers, logisticians purchasing agents, industrial production managers, and distribution managers. They can also seek certifications like the Certified Supply Chain Manager (CSCM) or the Certified Public Contract Manager (CPCM) to enhance their career prospects.
Be sure to check if the institution is accredited. This is done by a company like the U.S. Department of Education, or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. These organizations recognize 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. You should look for a school that has high student-to-teacher ratios, as this will allow you to receive quality education.
Some colleges offer hybrid or online programs, which provide classroom instruction in conjunction with online learning opportunities. This kind of format could appeal to those who want an affluent schedule or are unable to attend traditional classes. Some online-only programs offer associate or certificate degrees as well as master’s or bachelor’s degrees.
